Central Market

The Central Market of Valencia is one of the most iconic places in the historic centre of the city and an important part of Valencia’s cultural and gastronomic identity. The current building was opened in 1928, although the site had been used as a market since the Middle Ages. In 1839, an open-air market known as the Mercado Nuevo was established there, but as the city grew, a larger and more modern building became necessary.

The present market was designed by the architects Alejandro Soler March and Francisco Guàrdia Vial and is considered an outstanding example of Valencian Modernist architecture. Its structure combines iron, glass, stone and colourful ceramics, creating a bright and elegant building. One of its most distinctive features is its large central dome, which rises around 30 metres above the market and allows natural light to enter the interior. The building is also decorated with motifs inspired by nature and Valencia’s agricultural landscape.

Inside, the market is full of life, with hundreds of stalls selling fresh and traditional products. Visitors can find fruit and vegetables from the Valencian region, fresh fish and seafood, meat, cheeses, sausages, bread and many other local products. The combination of its beautiful architecture, colourful atmosphere and traditional food makes the Central Market more than just a place to shop.
