La Lonja de la Seda

The Lonja de la Seda, also known as the Silk Exchange, is one of the most important historical monuments in Valencia. Located in the historic centre, opposite the Central Market, it was built mainly during the 15th century, a period when Valencia was experiencing great economic and commercial growth. The building was created as a place where merchants could meet, negotiate and trade goods, especially silk and other valuable products.

The Lonja is considered one of the finest examples of Valencian Gothic architecture. Its exterior features impressive stone walls, large entrances and detailed decorative elements, while the interior is famous for its tall, twisted columns and spacious halls. One of the most spectacular areas is the Sala de Contratación, or Contract Hall, where the columns rise towards the ceiling and create a unique architectural effect.

Another important part of the monument is the Patio de los Naranjos, a peaceful courtyard decorated with orange trees. Visitors can also see the Torreón, a historic tower that forms part of the complex. Every part of the building reflects the importance of commerce and the prosperity that Valencia experienced during the late Middle Ages.

The Lonja de la Seda is not only an architectural attraction but also an important symbol of Valencia’s history as a major Mediterranean trading city. In recognition of its outstanding historical and cultural value, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
