The Royal Basilica of Our Lady of the Forsaken (Real Basílica de Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados) is the main religious building built in Valencia in the 17th century and the first new Baroque building.
It is a sanctuary dedicated to the Virgen de los Desamparados, Patron Saint of Valencia, located in the area of the Plaza de la Virgen which, together with the cathedral, forms one of the most important enclaves of the historic centre of the city.
It was built between 1652 and 1667 by Diego Martínez Ponce de Urrana and stands out for three main reasons: it is the only church in the historic quarter that is a new construction, the dome is slightly displaced towards the cathedral, and it has a “camarín”: a small chapel that venerates an image.
In the same building is the Museo Mariano, which exhibits the works of great masters of different artistic disciplines, such as the frescoes by Palomino.
