The Museo Valenciano de la Ilustración y de la Modernidad is the temporary exhibition centre owned by the Diputación de Valencia. The project was initiated by the former Minister of Culture Manuel Tarancón together with Marc Borràs and Rafael Company in 1995.
The building is the work of the Sevillian architect Guillermo Vázquez and is one of the best examples of contemporary functionalist architecture. It received the CEOE architecture prize in 2001. It is made of concrete and is 75 metres long.
It consists of three areas: the first space dedicated to the permanent exhibition ‘The adventure of thought’, the temporary exhibition area and the assembly hall and the internal area where the library, study and administration centre are located.
In 2012 the 1.7 hectare garden was inaugurated, making it one of the most important green spaces in the city.
